Bonus – I Think the Kids Say: REKT!!

Two things here: first it’s just danged interesting to see. Got one on a wall the other day of a jumping spider with a honeybee in its clutches, but wasn’t quite clear enough to post. This time, it was a bulb fly- one of those nasty ones flies that wrecks the daffodils.

The other is the mimicry evident in the fly. Looks lots like a small bumble. Great adaptive move.

Bonus – In Flight – through the Helianthemum

Helianthemum – also known as rock rose, sunrose, rushrose, and frostweed. Pretty neat stuff…my only complaint is that it closes up early in the evening.

This particular bee wasn’t very interested in the pollen – I don’t think it was ready yet, yesterday – but she hovered around long enough for me to get almost good focus on a number of shots. And look at that huge pollen bucket (and beetongue!). Here’s one of them:

Honeybee on the Creeping Thyme – again

Like the detail on this one a lot. Didn’t have much time to shoot yesterday, but I got a few good ones, maybe. This particular ground cover is really a go-to for me when I cannot find bees elsewhere. Always several on it posing for me. And it persists all Summer.

Trying something new today – seems that if the tags in the upper left are present (at least on the browser version (vs. the phone), it squishes the pic some – robs it of size. So perhaps if I put it under some narrative, you’ll get the full 1000px. Cannot figure out a good way to make the pictures enlarge in a pop-out yet.

You know the size of a honeybee – more or less. Compare the little green one I posted as today’s bee. And realize that it’s hanging off of a single anther…and is in the foreground. Tiny bee!

And this one is pretty cool herself. Check out her neck…

Shot this one this afternoon, by the way.

100+ Bee Day – May 10th

Because May 10th was the 100th consecutive day of the “Bee-a-Day” on this site, I decided to celebrate by posting 100 bees that day. I kinda got carried away. Final tally: 150 bees posted, 10 bonus (quasi-)pollinators, and one beebaby iris.

Bonus and Digression – Last of the ‘BeeBabies’

The fourth of four finally opened today – here it is. So…we had a pod of bee-bred iris seeds, planted them, and they flowered this year. They’re all from the same pod – siblings – yet are very different. The other three can be found here and here and here. Neat stuff. My favorite is the purple, but this one is plenty neat itself.
