This one Fell from the Dandelion

Similar looking bees – same temperature, light, etc., and some are as wild and fast and spastic as hummingbirds – while others are logy and even slower than the most sluggish bumbles. Not sure why that is. This little one fell off a dandelion into the lawn and wasn’t in much of a hurry to get going again. But I got a good look at her and it’s an interesting shot. She ended up climbing up a blade and taking flight and started feeding again. But even then, a slow mover. I do like different looks, though, and a not-on-a-blossom bee is a neat one for today. The layering of the grass with her and her parts is neat, too.

First on the Catmint (I think)

While you cannot tell, this is a metallic green one. So covered in pollen, too. And a great look at the tongue and mandibles. Firsts are fun. And the catmint has started to come into its own again. Had some great looks at this little bee, but my camera froze up and had a remove-the-battery reset. Germane to nothing, but a reminder that things mechanical (and electronic) are part of the process – and something I usually take for granted. So I sat and watched this little one until she was finished and flew away before I started fiddling with/fixing the camera. Lesson in there somewhere, I guess.

Finally! On an Iris

Not sure why the bees are so shy this spring, but it’s odd. JodyBees has had to feed the hives tho there’s a huge buffet set out for them. Just guessing, but I think that there are more than one hundered different varieties of irises blooming in the garden right now… Had a second (and only that) to shoot bees today…and caught this one. Not sure which variety this iris is, but if it’s important, I’ll find out.

Lousy Bee Weather Today…

So here’s a neat shot in the lavender from last June. Looks like this week will be spotty for bees, but we’re in a terrible drought here in Utah, so I’ll not complain (much). Really, really, really need the water. Nice look at her wing today – as well as the three eyes on the top of her head – and just a bit of a glimpse of her neck.

Rain Cold Wind Today

Keeps the bees inside, but here’s a shot from yesterday. More with the grape hyacinths again, but an interesting white frame along the bottom. Nice look at her wing, face, and the pollen, too. Just a workmanlike shot – of a cute little worker. When you do something every day, shots like this one make up the bones of the effort. And she really couldn’t be any cuter. Further…if this is what I have to worry about today, it’s a pretty good day ;).

Back to the Dandelions Again and Again

Problem I mentioned yesterday. I don’t mind so much for myself. It’s pretty compelling to shoot at the dandelions – mostly because they’re such an interesting, pollen-laden flower. But I do like variety on this site. Guess I could publish some stuff from earlier this year or last year. But…there’s value in publishing a shot today that’s shot today (as was this one). Great tongue on this little one!
